Folic acid
Indications/Uses
Maintenance dose of folic acid in pregnancy. Treatment of megaloblastic anaemia caused by deficiency of folic acid.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Maintenance dose in pregnancy 5 mg daily during 1st trimester of pregnancy. Treatment of megaloblastic anaemia Adult Initially 10-20 mg daily for 14 days, or until a haemopoietic response is obtained. Daily maintenance: 2.5-10 mg. Childn 5-15 mg daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Special Precautions
Should never be given alone or in combination w/ inadequate amounts of hydroxocobalamin. Not for prevention of onset of subacute combined degeneration of the cord. Large & continuous doses may lower blood conc of vit B12. Availability of folates may be inhibited by gastric acidity & presence of ascorbate in the GI tract.
Adverse Reactions
Drug Interactions
Reduced intestinal absorption w/ metformin. Folate depletion w/ phenytoin.
